Document filing, serving, and collecting. We act as filing agents at the Sydney CBD registries, such as filing documents (including urgent filings ahead of a deadline), serving and collecting documents, collecting orders, sealed copies and subpoenaed material, and photocopying and providing first access to subpoena productions. If a document must be filed today and your firm is not in Sydney, tell us the deadline when you instruct us.

Tribunal and commission attendances. We accept agency instructions for NCAT listings, conciliations and directions, and for matters in the Administrative Review Tribunal and the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW.

Examination and enforcement attendances. We attend examination and enforcement listings as agents for firms whose judgment enforcement work requires a Sydney attendance.

What is a legal agent?

A legal agent (also called a town agent or law agent) is a solicitor who attends a court or registry on behalf of another law firm — typically an interstate, regional or double-booked firm that cannot attend itself. The agent acts on the instructing firm’s instructions and reports back; carriage of the matter stays with the instructing firm.

Do you act as a town agent for interstate and regional firms?

Yes. Town agency work — Sydney court and registry attendances for firms based elsewhere — is a core part of our practice. Most town agency instructions arrive by email and are confirmed the same day.

Do law agents act for our client or for our firm?

We act as agent on the instructing firm’s instructions. The form and content of documents and the conduct of the proceedings remain with your firm; our role is to carry out the attendance accurately and report back the same day.

How are agency fees charged?

Agency fees are confirmed in writing when the instruction is confirmed, before the attendance, and apply to the attendance itself. If further attendances become necessary, we tell you before any additional cost is incurred.
